Sprint kayaking is an Olympic discipline. British paddlers won medals for sprint kayaking in the 2016 Olympics and Paralympics. In sprint regattas paddlers compete over 200m, 500m and 1000m in K1s, K2s and K4s. There are 9 lanes and at National regattas paddlers are ranked in classes so you race against people of your speed. The rankings are senior women A to D, senior men A to D, Junior men (over 12) A to D, Junior women A to D, and Masters A to D and Master Women A and B. To race at a national regatta, paddlers practice at their club to see if they can achieve the 500m qualifying time, and if they do they are registered by the club to sprint (by a club Sprint Rep). Paddlers new to sprinting start in group D and as they improve they move up through the groups to A. Mini sprint races are for children aged between 9 and 12 years and are always over 500m. Sprint Canoe races are run at the same events and we hope to be able to enter paddlers in those too one year soon.
There are 5 national sprint regattas each year at the National Watersports Centre in Nottingham and Norwich Canoe Club enters a big team in all of these. In the Inter club championships in 2016 we had 53 paddlers racing in 188 races over two days: a fabulously fun club weekend!
The dates of these for 2017 are:-
• 8th and 9th April 2017
• 6th and 7th May 2017
• 3rd and 4th June 2017
• 1st and 2nd July 2017
• 2nd and 3rd September 2017
In addition to the national events, some club members also enter regional sprint regattas including our very own regional regatta which in recent years has been held in August.
Over the last few years our athletes have represented Great Britain at junior and senior international level, including at the inaugural European Games in Baku in 2015, the 2015 and 2016 European Championships and the 2016 Olympic Hopes regatta.
